ROLE SUMMARY

 

A Patient Safety Attendant is responsible for helping maintain the safety and well-being of patients within the hospital setting.
These staff members provide continuous observation and support to patients who may be at risk for falls, confusion, wandering, self-harm, or unsafe behaviors.

The Patient Safety Attendant works closely with nurses and hospital staff to ensure the patient remains safe and supported throughout their hospital stay.

 

COMMON RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Safety Attendants may assist with:

  • Monitoring patients continuously for safety
  • Preventing falls and injuries
  • Alerting nursing staff if assistance is needed
  • Assisting patients when walking or going to the bathroom
  • Helping redirect confused or restless patients
  • Observing patients who may be behavioral health or high-risk
  • Ensuring patients do not remove medical equipment or leave unsafe areas
  • Providing companionship and reassurance to patients
  • Reporting changes in patient behavior to nursing staff immediately

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

Patient Safety Attendants:

  • Do not perform nursing duties unless specifically authorized
  • Must remain alert and attentive at all times
  • Must follow hospital safety procedures and chain of command
  • Must maintain professionalism and confidentiality
  • Must communicate effectively with nurses and hospital staff
  • May work with behavioral health, dementia, elderly, or confused patients

 

QUALITIES OF A STRONG PATIENT SAFETY ATTENDANT

Successful candidates are typically:

  • At least 1 year of hospital-based experience in roles such as Patient Sitter, Patient Observer, CNA, Behavioral Health Support Staff, or similar hospital-based patient care positions
  • Active Maryland CNA License

SHIFT EXPECTATIONS

Most hospital staffing shifts are:

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Day or night shifts
  • Weekday and weekend availability may be required
  • Fast-paced hospital environments

 

Staff should arrive on time, maintain professionalism, and remain engaged throughout the shift.

 

Pay: $23.50 per hour
