Job Description

Job Description Special Education Coordinator. The position coordinates the Special Education program and ensures campus compliance with Special Education law for the 2026-2027 academic year. Responsibilities Train certified teachers, general education teachers, and other staff on confidentiality and compliance with state and federal laws. Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned. Assist school administration in scheduling classes for special education and gifted and talented instruction. Plan and implement staff development and in‑service programs pertaining to special education and gifted and talented. Monitor SPED/504/CLUE students’ academic progress and use assessments to coordinate instruction and scheduling. Compile, maintain, submit, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and documents. Ensure SPED/504/CLUE classrooms or instructional environments are safe, organized, accessible, and conducive to learning. Maintain written and oral communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers to update them on student progress. Collaborate with district and state personnel and other professionals to conduct school‑wide instructional activities for SPED/504/CLUE students and their parents. Collaborate with general education teachers to meet SPED/504/CLUE students’ instructional needs. Advocate for equitable educational opportunities for SPED/504/CLUE students. Communicate instructional expectations and progress to students. Provide SPED or CLUE instruction if assigned; if teaching, comply with teacher position duties. Support general education/special education teachers and administrators in implementing appropriate strategies for students with disabilities. Implement accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in both general education and special education contexts. Align instructional programs with learning styles and modalities and correlate IEPs with the regular curriculum guide. Distribute modifications, accommodations, and IEPs to related teachers and personnel and maintain documentation. Plan, develop, implement, and administer programs and services to meet identified needs, including new services. Schedule, prepare, and facilitate ARD/IEP/CLUE meetings, serving as an ARD/IEP Committee leader. Assist regular personnel in providing an appropriate environment for mainstreamed students. Provide recommendations to the ARD Committee based on evaluation findings. Suggest alternative teaching methods. Assess relationships between student performance and handicapping conditions. Determine need for remedial or tutorial assistance. Coordinate special education staff input to meet each child’s needs. Maintain confidential records and complete reports and other evaluations. Arrange related services with outside personnel (speech therapists, diagnosticians, OT, PT, etc.). Prepare and present reports at Board of Directors and other meetings. Display professionalism and serve as a role model within MSE and the community. Coordinate progress report completion per district guidelines. Manage IEPs using district software and ensure IEP timeline compliance for assigned caseload. Travel to campuses and attend meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate. Highly qualified in subject area. Administrative experience preferred. Compliance with Tennessee Code Annotated and Tennessee Board of Education regulations. Physically and mentally able to perform job responsibilities. Performance Aptitudes Data Utilization: Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data, and use analysis to align with standards. Human Interaction: Ability to guide, supervise, assist, and interpret procedures and standards for others. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Ability to operate equipment and tools required for essential tasks. Verbal Aptitude: Ability to use descriptive and advisory data effectively. Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform arithmetic and interpret graphs. Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles, interpret instructions in multiple formats, and exercise judgment to adapt methods and standards. Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information and planning programs. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Occasional light lifting. Occasional night or weekend activities. Office setting with prolonged desk work. Moderate travel required. Compensation Full‑time: $71,000 to $103,000 per year.
